What Is Your Emotional Type?

Your Emotional Type is the impression you create before you say a word. It comes through your eyes, expression, posture, and natural emotional energy. Casting may read you as guarded, warm, volatile, authoritative, vulnerable, mischievous, quietly dangerous… your options are truly unlimited. That reading helps them imagine what you want, what you’re hiding, and how you might fit into a story.

Nick's Emotional Type

I ask actors I photograph to understand the qualities they naturally communicate on camera, so that we can make sure those qualities show up in their headshots. But I practice what I preach! I apply the same process to my own headshots:

Watchful, intelligent, and privately burdened — perceptive, emotionally contained, hard to fully access, and carrying more history than he reveals.

The images below don’t express that Emotional Type in exactly the same way. Changes in wardrobe, lighting, expression, and framing shift it toward different roles and circumstances. The underlying emotional impression, however, remains consistent. That consistency gives the photographs a clear point of view while allowing casting to imagine more than one way to use me.
